A Palestinian refugee feeds her baby as the sunlight floods the inside of her family’s home in the town of Beit Lahya in the northern Gaza Strip.
The implicit detail is that the child is also a refugee whose agency is rejected by his occupiers. He will soon be able to walk outside of this house on his own two feet. But siege and military blockades will keep him from ever crossing the border and experiencing the world around him, or ever even living with the standards we expect for ourselves. The cycle continues, and unless something is done to put an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories, his future children will follow in his footsteps, which, regrettably, stop just outside of his refugee camp.
