A Palestinian man with a classic red kuffiyeh draped over his head is reflected in a mirror as he contemplates on a doorstep in Jerusalem’s Old City.
This photograph really strikes me because the subject, whose cane and attire remind me of the quintessential Palestinian uncle, is so perfectly framed by the mirrors reflecting him as he himself reflects on what is around him. Plus, he’s engaged in a common Palestinian past-time: doorstep sitting. What may very well be perceived as an unproductive waste of time can actually be a rare opportunity to collect one’s thoughts, to answer life’s tough questions, or even to use one’s imagination as an escape from the conditions surrounding them.
