The American Muslims for Palestine hosted its annual Nakba commemoration event a little over one week ago. Families, friends, and community members from all over the Chicagoland area gathered to tour a mock wall, watch live dabke performances, and march with a parade to the beat of classical watani songs.
The event served as a modest reminder of the tragedy of the Nakba, when over 750,000 Palestinians were forced to flee from their homes between 1947 and 1949. Many thousands of Palestinians were executed and more than 400 Palestinian villages were depopulated and entirely wiped off the map.
Since then, Israel’s leaders and backers have done everything they can to keep Palestinians from returning to their homes — a legal right, mind you — and even to deny the Nakba ever happened. But generation after generation of Palestinians have remained rooted to their land, refusing to allow these injustices to go unnoticed or forgotten.
This is the youngest generation, and at the rate things are going, these are the ones who can very well bring us home once and for all.
And here are some more “demographic threats” for good measure.
